Notorious for its Port Wine, the world’s most famous liqueur, the Douro is also known for its still wines. In north-eastern Portugal, the region encompasses 250,000 hectares of mountainous terrain, where hills and valleys accommodate 44,000 hectares of vineyards in 3 sub-regions crossed by the Douro River. More than 110 grape varieties withstand harsh winters and scorching summers in man-made schist terraces.

Winemaker: Luís Sottomayor

When I entered, in 1989, a winemaking team led by Master Fernando Nicolau de Almeida, Luis Sottomayor knew that he was at home certain to be able to participate in the production of two melhores vinhos do Douro. In spite of not his professional pursuit ter já passed by other national and international wine regions, or commitment of Luís Sottomayor as Douro eo Vinho do Porto and inquestionável, e valeu-lhe, in 2010, or award of Enologist do Ano de Vinhos Fortified, awarded by the Revista de Vinhos, uma you give the most prestigious national publications. In 2012, he was nominated for a Winemaker of the Year not recognized by the International Wine Challenge, a period that qualifies the Revista de Vinhos, who ended up being distinguished by Luís Sottomayor, chosen as Winemaker of the Year 2012.

Born in Moreira da Maia, married to the country of three, Luís Sottomayor has a complete academic training that includes Enology courses at the University of Dijon, in Borgonha, and at the University of Charles Sturt, in Austria, for more than a post-graduation in Oenology by the Escola Superior de Biotecnologia do Porto.
