Reducing the Carbon Footprint of Transport: Portugal - Italy
As part of the Global Sustainability Approach - Seed the Future - Sogrape's Supply Chain Department in Portugal recently implemented a system to reduce the carbon footprint in the distribution of our wines.
Following a strategic approach and an analysis of our distribution routes, combined with a joint effort between customers and hauliers, we were able to restructure the current emissions, costs and delivery times and reduce the carbon emissions from transporting goods between Portugal and Italy by 70%. What would have been around 326.08 tCO2 is now 93.18 tCO2 for the same weight of goods.
In this new scenario, we established a new sea and rail transport route. Although we are faced with a longer distance, this alternative has little impact on lead times and together with our client, we have managed to improve planning. We always provide an alternative means of transport to fulfil our commitments for urgent orders.
This milestone was only achieved thanks to the cooperation and implementation of processes by Sogrape and our clients in favour of a more efficient value chain in line with current global Sustainability targets.
