Sustainable Transport: BIO CNG trucks

At Sogrape, we are committed to implementing Sustainability practices in all aspects of our business. We have recently stepped up our efforts to reduce CO2 emissions, related to the transport of our raw materials, particularly glass bottles.

Significantly, BAGlass, in collaboration with Sogrape, has implemented a new form of transport for our bottles of Mateus wines. This initiative involves the use of two trucks, powered by biomethane: the "BIO CNG", which dispatch daily deliveries from our Lisbon plant to our facilities in Avintes. This new method of transport, which starts from Venda Nova to Sogrape, is designed to advance a significant reduction in our carbon footprint.

Advantages of using Biomethane in freight transport:

1. Reduction of CO2 Emissions: Biomethane is a source of renewable energy produced from the decomposition of organic matter. By using biomethane instead of fossil fuels, we are able to reduce the CO2 emissions associated with transportation.

2. Lower Environmental Impact: In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, biomethane also serves to reduce air pollution as it emits fewer particulates and nitrogen oxides (NOx) compared to diesel.

3. Organic Waste Recovery: Biomethane production uses organic waste which could otherwise be disposed of safely in landfills. This process contributes to both efficient waste management and the circular economy.

4. Renewable Energy Source: Biomethane is produced continuously from organic materials, thus becoming a source of sustainable and renewable energy, as opposed to fossil fuels which are finite.

5. Reducing Dependence on Fossil Fuels: The use of biomethane contributes to the diversification of energy sources and reduces dependence on fossil fuels, promoting energy security.

Impact on Carbon Footprint:

• Emissions Reduction: With the use of biomethane-powered trucks, our carbon footprint will be reduced by 80% in the transport of Mateus wine bottles.

• Global Reduction: This measure represents a 40% decrease in total emissions associated with Sogrape deliveries.
