Sogrape Reduces Emissions, Strengthens Water Efficiency And Accelerates Energy Transition In 2025
Sogrape reduced greenhouse gas emissions in Portugal and Spain, cut specific water consumption by more than 40%, and increased the use of renewable energy throughout 2025, reinforcing its commitment to climate transition and responsible resource management. These and other achievements are highlighted in the newly released 2025 Sustainability Report, which demonstrates how the company’s Global Sustainability Programme, Seed the Future, continues to turn ambition into action across the organisation.
The company’s performance was once again recognised internationally, receiving the Best Logistics and Supply Chain Green Initiative award for the second consecutive year at The Drinks Business Green Awards, a distinction that recognises sustainability and innovation initiatives across the supply chain.
Paving the way for a healthier planet
Biodiversity preservation and climate adaptation remained at the heart of the company’s activities, through the implementation of sustainable agricultural practices, soil conservation measures, and research projects focused on resilient, nature-positive viticulture.
In 2025, Sogrape further accelerated the decarbonisation pathway established for its operations. In Portugal and Spain, greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 13.2% and 11.6%, respectively, while carbon removals in Portugal exceeded direct equivalent emissions (Scope 1) by 40%.
Progress on the energy transition also continued to gain momentum. In Portugal, 66.6% of the electricity consumed originated from renewable sources, while total energy consumption fell by approximately 8% compared to the previous year. At the same time, the company generated 1,209.3 MWh of renewable energy across its operations in Portugal, Spain, Argentina, Chile and the United Kingdom.
Water management remained a strategic priority. In 2025, specific water consumption in Portugal was reduced by 40.5%, from 21.9 litres to 13 litres per 750 ml bottle, driven by efficiency improvements and investments in water reuse and treatment technologies, strengthening operational resilience in the face of climate change challenges.
Significant progress was also achieved in the area of circular economy, with the waste recovery rate reaching 97.6% in Portugal and 64.3% in Spain, reflecting the company’s ongoing efforts to optimise processes and use resources more efficiently.
2025 was also a year of tangible projects delivering impact throughout the value chain. Among these were the expansion and modernisation of the Avintes production and logistics hub, strengthening the company’s industrial and energy infrastructure; packaging optimisation and sustainable product development initiatives focused on reducing environmental impact; and logistics backhauling and decarbonisation projects, making distribution more efficient.
Safeguarding a legacy on its journey into the future
Innovation continues to play a central role in Sogrape’s strategy to address industry challenges and prepare a more resilient viticulture for the decades ahead. In 2025, the company developed 38 Research & Development projects in collaboration with more than 200 partners, reinforcing the connection between scientific knowledge, innovation and sustainability. Within this framework, Sogrape continued to invest in solutions dedicated to soil health and the resilience of agricultural systems, centred on the circular valorisation of vineyard by-products.
The company’s commitment to new technologies was also reflected in the assessment of 120 start-ups, with pilot solutions developed in areas such as artificial intelligence, precision viticulture and smart packaging, among other technologies with the potential to transform the wine sector.
Sustainability also extended across the value chain. In 2025, Sogrape worked closely with around 2,160 grape suppliers, fostering long-term relationships and shared development, with 76% of suppliers in Portugal being locally based. The continued expansion of the Sogrape Wine Academy training offer further promoted knowledge sharing and education within the world of wine.
Inspiring happier and more responsible lives
With 1,330 employees across eight geographies, Sogrape maintains a strong commitment to the health, safety, development and wellbeing of its people, creating the conditions for sustainable and inclusive organisational growth.
The company’s commitment also extends to the communities where it operates. In 2025, it supported more than 20 projects in Portugal and Spain in the areas of culture, education and social impact, working in partnership with local institutions and civil society organisations. At the same time, it continued to promote a culture of responsible consumption, transparency and consumer information, reaching 4.65 million people.
“Sustainability has been part of Sogrape’s identity since its foundation in 1942. It is reflected in the way we cultivate our vineyards, produce our wines, work with our partners, and think about the future of the company. The 2025 Report shows that we are getting ever closer to the goals we have set ourselves, but it also demonstrates that this is an ongoing commitment. We inherited a legacy that we have the responsibility to preserve and strengthen, so that we can pass it on to future generations in an even more resilient, innovative and sustainable way. This commitment is part of Sogrape’s DNA and will continue to guide every decision we make,” says Mafalda Guedes, Head of Corporate Communications and Sustainability at Sogrape and a fourth-generation member of the founding family.
