8000 from Marqués de Burgos. 8000 vines

LAN’s adventure in the Ribera del Duero reached the pinnacle of its expression with the 2012 vintage of 8000 de Marqués de Burgos, the first release of this wine. An adventure that started back in 2009, when we took our first cautious steps to increase our knowledge of the vineyard, seeking balance between the fruit and oak. This unique wine, of great elegance and maturity, is a faithful reflection of this land and the constant selection of old vines.

From just 8000 old vines, located in vineyards in Quintana del Pidio and La Aguilera, at an altitude between 700 and 900 metres, in the oldest area of vineyards in the whole D.O. Ribera del Duero. Land consolidation did not occur here so these are tiny plots that are manually tilled. The grapes are from four small parcels with very low yields: Santa Centola, Carracabañes, Santa Ana and Carraroa, which are located on south-facing slopes with poor, stony soils.

The grapes are harvested by hand in small 20kg crates. Picked parcel-by-parcel, at the optimum moment of ripeness in an effort to maximise the potential of each plot. Afterwards, the grapes are hand selected by bunch upon arrival at the winery.

Alcoholic fermentation takes place over ten days in two small vats, with daily punching down of the cap and light pump-overs. Maceration then takes place over ten days. Afterwards, malolactic fermentation took place in thirteen new extra fine-grained French oak barrels from the Tronçais Forest, with continuous lees stirring to achieve greater body and fleshiness on the palate. The wine was racked into new ultra-premium French oak barrels —Seguin Moreau Icone Elegance.

It was aged for 16 months in 100% fine-grained French oak barrels followed by 12 months in bottle. It was bottled unfiltered and unclarified, with these processes taking place naturally over time through natural sedimentation and decantation in the barrel.

Tasting note

Very intense, almost opaque cherry red. Pervasive and very complex aromas, notes of red fruit and black fruit stand out, intertwined with white flowers, and violets, the latter particularly associated with this variety when it is cultivated at high altitude. Sweet notes can also be appreciated, along with touches of menthol, black pepper and wild scrubland herbs. It is a mature, naturally elegant wine; broad and powerful on the palate, with perfectly integrated, rounded and enveloping tannins. It is very long lasting and expressive on the palate. A fine, elegant wine, full of flavour with a strong personality, that goes well with meat carpaccios and spicy dishes, including barbecued red meat.

And as such, Bodegas LAN’s challenge in the Ribera del Duero continues with Marqués de Burgos, a story of selection and craft winemaking that proves that our most unique wines have their origin in the vineyard.
