Committed to its Seed the Future Program, Sogrape is committed to promoting the conservation of nature and biodiversity, implementing actions that have a positive effect on them. Investing in research projects that contribute directly in this area, many initiatives have already been developed to pave the way for a healthier planet.
Sogrape invests over 1 million euros annually in R&D projects, proactively seeking partnerships and collaborating with recognized scientific entities around the world. Most of these projects contribute to nature conservation and biodiversity, increasing knowledge and developing new technologies that enhance their work in the natural environment. Sogrape is a catalyst in the conversation of the genetic diversity of ancestral grape varieties, supporting Portugal's pioneering work in the world, recognized by the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV) in 2019, and which gave rise to the first official certification of polyclonal selections of the vine.
We have set up a network of automated weather stations in its vineyards, providing data that help the understanding of the impacts of climate change on vines, ecosystems and biodiversity.
We are creating a stratified platform of knowledge about the ecosystems of its vineyards, where data are projected soils, plants, climate and biodiversity, for analysis and management decision making
We recently opened a Biodiversity Route at Quinta do Seixo, in the Douro, leading visitors along a 1 km path inside a vineyard, while providing them with the opportunity to acquire knowledge about all the elements that allow Nature and Biodiversity to support the viticulture activities
We collaborate and participate actively, together with other international entities, in projects that create innovative solutions to reduce the impact of our activity on the environment (ex: NOVATERRA and COPPEREPLACE)
We have joined the United Nations Global Compact and Business for Nature with the commitment to raise the level of ambition in advocating positive measures towards nature
We have also signed the COP15 Business Statement, joining the call for mandatory requirements for all companies to assess and disclose their impacts and dependencies on nature and biodiversity by 2030.
