Silk & Spice expands its offer with three new wines

Silk & Spice launches three new wines to complement the award-winning Silk & Spice Red Blend: Silk & Spice White Blend, Silk & Spice Silk Route, and Silk & Spice Spice Road. First launched in 2016, Silk & Spice pays homage to the sense of adventure, knowledge, and courage of the Portuguese sailors who, during the Age of Discovery, started the silk and spice trade routes from the far east to the rest of the world. The wine has been expertly blended to capture the silky and spicy aromas and flavors found in Portuguese indigenous grapes, and the fruit forward, contemporary taste has struck a chord with consumers and wine critics worldwide. Thanks to the Red Blend’s success and the desire to deliver new flavors and experiences to current consumers and to reach new ones, the brand created a Portuguese White Blend and two complementary Red Blends: Silk Route and Spice Road. All three wines were designed to surprise and delight wine drinkers with a sense of exploration. This range extension is also a tribute to the art of Portuguese blending, and highlights Portugal’s diversity in terroirs and grape varietals.

Introduced in 2016, Silk & Spice was a tremendous success”, said Raquel Seabra, Sogrape’s Executive Board Member. “The brand has been growing 30% each year and in 2022 reached 215.000 9L cases. Together with a great acceptance among international wine critics, it was time to take a step forward and complement the range with exciting new options that are true to the brand’s essence, as each new blend provides consumers distinctive, delicious, and easydrinking everyday wines that fit any occasion.

In the words of Diogo Sepúlveda, the winemaker responsible for Silk & Spice, “These new releases show the blending expertise of Portuguese winemakers, and the enormous potential of indigenous grapes and their immense diversity. We aimed for freshness in the White Blend, softness for the Silk Route, and texture for the Spice Road.”

The new wine extensions include:

Silk & Spice White Blend 2021 Vintage: Silk & Spice White Blend presents aromas of ripe peach, melon, and white flowers, balanced with notes of sweet spices and vanilla. The blend of Portuguese native varietals was sourced from selected vineyards in Vinho Verde, Bairrada, and Lisboa wine regions. The White Blend has the same label design as the Silk & Spice Red Blend, only with bright green colors to portray its light and refreshing qualities. Grape Varieties: Bical, Arinto, Alvarinho ABV: 13%

Silk & Spice Silk Route 2020 Vintage: The smoothest Red Blend in the portfolio, this wine went through a gentle maceration process to preserve its fruit forward notes and freshness. With hints of red fruits, white chocolate, and light vanilla on the nose, this wine is incredibly easy to drink and perfect for daily consumption. Depicted on the eyecatching label is the Bombyx Mori, otherwise known as the domesticated Silk Moth, responsible for making the global silk trade what it is today – another nod to the silk trade routes that inspired this new wine. Grape Varieties: Tinta Roriz, Baga, Merlot ABV: 13%

Silk & Spice Spice Road 2020 Vintage: The boldest of the new Silk & Spice offerings, this wine is made from a selection of grapes with optimum ripening. It delivers a full bodied, oaky flavor with notes of spicy black pepper and rich dark chocolate. The compass on the label highlights some of the most important spices traded during the Portuguese explorer’s journeys that can now be found around the world. Grape Varieties: Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, Touriga Nacional ABV: 13.5%

The three new blends will be available at wine and spirits retailers in selected markets, such as United States of America, Canada, Mozambique, Angola, South Africa, Brazil, Slovenia, South Korea, and others.
