Sogrape Wine Tourism Invites You To Celebrate International Port Wine Day Between Gaia And Douro
September is all about the grape harvest, long late afternoons and, of course, Port Wine. International Port Wine Day, established in Portugal by the Douro and Port Wine Institute (IVDP) on 10 September, is the perfect invitation to rediscover one of Portugal’s greatest symbols, not only at the table but in the places where its history continues to be written.
From the century-old cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia to the terraced vineyards of the Douro, the programme organised by Porto Ferreira and Sandeman brings together guided tours, special tastings, food and wine pairings and toasts in unique settings, in a celebration that brings together heritage, tradition and gastronomy.
A toast to history in Vila Nova de Gaia
In Vila Nova de Gaia, the Porto Ferreira and Sandeman Cellars open their doors to take visitors on a journey into the world of Port wine.
At the Porto Ferreira Cellars, visitors can learn about the story of Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, wander through corridors lined with century-old casks and enjoy a complimentary tasting of Porto Ferreira Dona Antónia 10-Year-Old White.
At the Sandeman Cellars, the tour comes to life through the iconic figure of ‘The Don’, who continues to guide visitors through the brand’s historic spaces. To mark International Port Day, anyone taking a guided tour will also be able to raise a glass to a complimentary Port and Tonic at the [Terrace by Sogrape]https://sograpedistribuicao.pt/pt/sandeman-terrace-inaugura-novo-gastrobar/), which offers a stunning view over the Douro. The origins of Port wine
For those wishing to extend the celebration, the journey continues to the heart of the Douro, to Quinta do Seixo, one of Sandeman’s most iconic estates in the region.
Set against a landscape designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it stands out for its privileged location overlooking the River Douro and for the wine tourism experience it offers. In 2025, it was recognised as one of the world’s finest vineyards, having been included in The World’s 50 Best Vineyards ranking. Among the experiences on offer, the Biodiversity Trail stands out, having received an Honourable Mention at the 2026 Best of Wine Tourism Awards in the category of sustainable practices in wine tourism. Quinta do Seixo invites visitors to discover the origins of Port wine through tours of the winery, tastings of different vintages and tasting sessions with views over the vineyards.
