New Vintage Of The Tribute Wine To Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira
Some wines are born with a purpose greater than simply being enjoyed. Antónia Adelaide Ferreira DOC Douro is one of them: created to eternalize the memory and legacy of a woman who forever changed the Douro and Portuguese wine. The 2021 vintage has just been released to the market, with a limited production of just over 5,000 bottles.
Released annually to mark her birthday, this wine seeks to reflect the values and personality of the woman who changed the course of Douro’s history. Originating from two terroirs that Dona Antónia deeply cherished — Cima Corgo and Douro Superior — the 2021 vintage reveals a deep, elegant, and firm profile, much like the woman who lends it her name.
“This is an intense, full-bodied, voluminous wine of great complexity, the result of a meticulous selection of blends from our finest Douro estates. For the 2021 harvest, we selected lots from Quinta da Leda, Quinta do Seixo, Quinta do Caêdo, Quinta do Sairrão, and Quinta do Porto. These wines aged in French oak barrels for six months before being blended and matured for a further 24 months in 2,000-liter oak vats, allowing us to bottle the very best of the Douro as a renewed tribute to Dona Antónia, who did so much for this region,” explains Luís de Sottomayor, the winemaker responsible for the project.
The result is a wine with an intense ruby color and a complex aroma highlighting notes of red and black fruit, spices such as pepper and nutmeg, a stony minerality, and subtle, elegant, well-integrated oak. On the palate, it shows great volume, vibrant acidity, firm tannins, and a long, harmonious finish.
The excellence of this vintage has already been recognized internationally, with Antónia Adelaide Ferreira DOC Douro Red 2021 receiving its first international critics’ score — an outstanding 95 points from James Suckling.
Since 2011, the bicentennial of Dona Antónia’s birth, Sogrape has been honoring the memory of this remarkable woman through this wine, a symbol of her unparalleled contribution to Portuguese viticulture.
