Sogrape Reduces Emissions By 25% Since 2021 And Reinforces Its Commitment To The Future Of Wine
At a time when climate change is posing growing challenges to viticulture, Sogrape continues to strengthen its investment in innovation, efficient resource management, and biodiversity preservation to ensure the long-term sustainability of wine production.
Sustainability is a strategic priority for the company and is embedded in the way it manages its business, protects the territories where it operates, and prepares for the future of the wine industry. This vision is embodied in its global sustainability programme, Seed the Future, launched in 2021. Built around the pillars of Planet, Legacy, and People, and supported by concrete commitments and targets, the programme is structured into three seven-year cycles running until 2042, the year of Sogrape’s centenary.
"Wine is, by its very nature, a legacy we inherit and a responsibility we pass on. Caring for the land, people, and communities is part of who we are and of the legacy we want to leave for future generations. That is why we see sustainability not only as a business commitment, but as a way of safeguarding the conditions that make it possible to continue producing great wines in the future. It is also how we seek to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals and create a lasting positive impact," says Mafalda Guedes, Sogrape’s Head of Corporate Communications and Sustainability and a fourth-generation member of the founding family.
Protecting the resources that make wine possible
Present in six Portuguese wine regions, Sogrape has been increasingly leveraging technology to enhance the resilience of its vineyards and promote more efficient management of natural resources. The 34 weather stations installed across Portugal enable the annual monitoring of vegetation in more than four million vines, supporting increasingly precise decision-making in water management and crop protection.
This investment in innovation is complemented by initiatives aimed at preserving viticultural heritage and natural ecosystems. In partnership with PORVID, the company is conducting varietal diversity trials that help conserve grapevine genetic heritage. Projects such as the Biodiversity Trail at Quinta do Seixo, in the Douro Valley, also contribute to the protection of natural habitats and the promotion of biodiversity.
This strategy has translated into tangible results. In 2025, Sogrape reduced its total greenhouse gas emissions by 25.2% compared to 2021 and achieved a waste recovery rate of 97.6% across its Portuguese operations. In the same year, renewable energy generation from photovoltaic panels installed in Portugal, Spain, Argentina, Chile, and the United Kingdom exceeded 1,200 MWh.
Investing in the people who shape the future
Ensuring the long-term future of the sector also means investing in people. With 1,330 employees across eight geographies, Sogrape currently ensures that 100% of its workforce is covered by occupational health and safety management systems. Between 2022 and 2025, in Portugal, the company reduced sick leave days by nearly 60% and recorded no workplace fatalities in the last year.
This commitment to people also extends to skills development, equal opportunities, and female empowerment through initiatives such as the Dona Antónia Awards, scholarship programmes, and partnerships with social impact organisations including Stand4Good and Bagos D’Ouro.
Contributing to global challenges
Through the Seed the Future programme, Sogrape seeks to contribute to several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, focusing its efforts on the areas where it believes it can generate the greatest impact. These include sustainable water management (SDG 6), affordable and clean energy (SDG 7), decent work and economic growth (SDG 8), responsible consumption and production (SDG 12), life on land (SDG 15), and partnerships for the goals (SDG 17). This commitment is further strengthened by Sogrape’s adherence to the UN Global Compact Principles, renewed annually through its progress reporting.
On National Sustainability Day, and in the year marking the 11th anniversary of the adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals by the United Nations, Sogrape reaffirms its long-term vision: to protect natural resources, empower people, and promote a more resilient viticulture sector capable of continuing to create value for the territories and communities where it operates.
