Sogrape Reduces Water Consumption by 30% In Portugal
With sustainability at the core of its strategy, Sogrape has been implementing innovative solutions for efficient water management. Between 2022 and 2025, the company reduced water consumption in Portugal by approximately 30%.
To mark World Water Day, celebrated on 22 March, Sogrape reaffirms its commitment to responsible water management through a cross cutting strategy that integrates sustainable practices and innovative solutions across the entire value chain — from viticulture and winemaking to industrial operations.
Responsible water management is a central pillar of Sogrape’s sustainability programme, Seed the Future. The programme includes the continuous monitoring of water stress in the regions where the company operates, enabling risks to be anticipated and promoting a more sustainable use of water resources, while contributing to the goal of minimising the environmental impact of its operations.
Between 2022 and 2025, Sogrape Portugal reduced its total water consumption by around 30%, from 1,031,422 m³ to 738,612 m³, with annual consumption currently stabilised at approximately 700,000 m³. Over the same period, water use intensity decreased from 17.41 to 13.02 litres per 0.75 L bottle of wine. This progress reflects the adoption of sustainable viticulture practices and the optimisation of industrial processes, including drip irrigation, soil moisture monitoring, water recirculation and rainwater harvesting.
Sogrape’s technological leadership has also received international recognition, having been awarded the Water Management Award at the Drinks Business Green Awards 2025. The award acknowledges the innovation of the phyto-WWTP at Quinta do Sairrão, in the Douro, a pioneering technology designed to manage high seasonal volumes during the harvest period while minimising environmental impact on the local ecosystem.
Sogrape maintains active involvement in more than 20 Research & Development projects focused on water efficiency in the wine growing regions where it operates, contributing to the dissemination of best practices and the development of solutions that benefit not only producers and winegrowers, but also local communities.
With an integrated and innovation driven approach, Sogrape continues to ensure that sustainability is embedded at every stage of the production process — so that each bottle reflects the responsible use of natural resources.
